With a “how to book” in our hands, we began sailing in March 1991 on an 18-foot daysailer, coping with rain, sleet, and snow on a partially frozen lake in Montana (can you spell terror??). After charter sailing in Tahiti in 1995, we returned to Montana to put our Catalina 27 sailboat up for sale and began our search for a larger boat. A blue-water cruiser was located in the Seattle area. An eleven-year restoration (ongoing) and early retirement plan was begun, with visions of life aboard a boat and possible cruising on the horizon. In the spring of 2006, Bella Sera (Italian for beautiful evening) was shipped by truck to St. Joseph, Michigan, beginning our summer cruise of Lake Michigan. In the fall, Gary and his sister brought the boat down the Inland Waterway to Green Turtle Bay, where we will remain for a couple of years while visiting relatives until we decide where the winds will take us next. The true captain of the boat is Claire the cat, a 4 year-old mixed breed, boat-loving critter. We two oldies, with “cruiseheimers”, met in East Africa and have been married 40 years. We have 3 children and 5 grandkids. We have enjoyed our stay at Green Turtle Bay, and thank everyone for their help and welcome.
